The CaretakerThe Caretaker by Jason Gurley

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A spaceship takes care of the last homo-sapien, her janitor. About 12,000 words or an hour long read.

The most interesting part was the new form of nuclear annihilation which has become popular in scifi, where the nukes blow up the nuclear waste storage facilities and nuclear power plants, to massively increase the radiation dose. This trope is used in other modern scifi’s also, I guess because classic nuclear exchange doesn’t do enough damage for their plots to work.
The spaceship was quite polite and caring, which is nice as well.
That’s it for good stuff.

I dislike the fact the author chose to ignore both Grey aliens which are abundant in our solar system, and deep underground military bases, which would do fine even with such surface conditions. The ending is pretty sad.

Can get it and a dozen other stories in the Robot Chronicles, which is under $5 on amazon as an ebook.
